BMI is an abbreviation for Body Mass Index. It is a mathematical formula commonly used to measure your health status (underweight, healthy, overweight or obese). It is expressed as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared.
Classification | body Mass Index (kg/m2) |
---|---|
Underweight | < 18.5 |
Normal | 18.5 - 24.9 |
Overweight | 25.0 - 29.9 |
Obesity, Class I | 30.0 - 34.9 |
Obesity, Class II | 35.0 - 39.9 |
Extreme Obesity, Class III | ≥ 40 |
However, BMI formula is not the best way to measure body fat, and it is not applicable in adolescents and athletes. You could be an athlete or an obese and have the exact same BMI!
